LIGHT THE WAY
Removing upper cabinets and adding larger windows near
the main sink let more light into the space that once felt
“claustrophobic,” according to Jayne. “I don’t miss those
cabinets, because we gained storage in other places.”
ayne Haugen Olson is big on the little things. To her, details such
as where the waffle iron is stored (in a drawer near the cooktop)
were just as important as choosing the sink and faucet for her
Minneapolis kitchen remodel. Her husband, Curt Olson, is an avid
cook and was equally interested in how the kitchen was organized
and how it looked. “We live in a
100
-year-old house, and we didn’t
want everything to be matching,” he says. Hence the contrasts:
black granite countertops and white cabinets, dark wood island with crisp white
carrara marble top. “Curt looked to me to create the template of the kitchen—we
joke that he’s the CEO and I’m the creative director,” says Jayne, who is editor in
chief of Delta Air Lines’
Sky
magazine. “Like a lot of people, I started tearing stuff
out of magazines.” Together, Jayne and architect Martha Yunker designed the
space based on Jayne’s list. “I walked through my old kitchen and made a
checklist about where we wanted to store things,” Jayne says. “We wanted it to
be a tight ship—a place for everything and everything in its place.”
